Preventing Blindness and Restoring Sight

Fighting Blindness in Angola supports life-changing eye care through training, equipment, treatment support, and professional collaboration.

Our work focuses on three major causes of sight loss:

  • Cataracts
  • Refractive errors
  • Diabetic retinopathy

These conditions are often treatable or preventable when proper medical care is available.

Supporting Eye Health Services

We support the development and operation of ophthalmology services across Angola by assisting local clinics and healthcare providers with resources, expertise, and equipment.

This includes helping clinics access:

  • Ophthalmic medical supplies
  • Surgical instruments
  • Diagnostic equipment
  • Clinical consumables

Where possible, we work directly with suppliers to ensure essential materials reach those who need them.

Training Healthcare Professionals

A key part of our work is strengthening local expertise.

We help provide training for:

  • Ophthalmologists
  • Cataract surgeons
  • Ophthalmology nurses
  • Technicians and community health workers

Training is delivered by experienced healthcare professionals, including consultant ophthalmologists and specialist nurses.

Training programmes include:

  • Sutureless incision cataract surgery (SICS)
  • Modern eye examination techniques
  • Prevention and treatment of diabetic retinopathy
  • Best practice in ophthalmology care

Supporting Treatment for Patients

Many people in Angola cannot afford the cost of eye treatment or surgery.

We help fund treatment, particularly cataract surgery, for patients who would otherwise go without care.

Restoring sight can transform lives, allowing people to return to work, care for their families and live independently.

Volunteer Medical Visits

Healthcare professionals from abroad occasionally visit Angola to work alongside local teams.

These visits provide:

  • Clinical support
  • Training and mentoring
  • Knowledge exchange
  • Additional surgical capacity

All visiting professionals work closely with local staff to strengthen long-term capacity.
